Health care organizations are bracing for impact as the industry transitions to the new 5010 electronic transaction standard that drives billing, reimbursement, many administrative functions, and accommodates the larger ICD-10 code sets. The new 5010 electronic transaction standard contains numerous modifications from its 4010 A1 predecessor, and the proposed CMS deadline of April 1, 2010 is quickly approaching. 5010 Final Rule Published
On January 15, 2009 the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) released the final rule for implementing the 5010 transaction standard for health care claims, and version D.0. for pharmacy claims. The final rule indicates that trading partners have to be ready to exchange 5010 transactions starting December 2010 and can ONLY exchange 5010 transactions starting January 1, 2012, instead of the April 1, 2010 date that was originally proposed.
Also released January 15th, was the final rule regarding the implementation of the ICD-10 code sets. Similar to the 5010 implementation date, the ICD-10 implementation deadline is being pushed back two years to Oct. 1, 2013. Both final rules contain responses from HHS on the public comments that the agency received on the proposed rules.
